Bio
Born and practicing in Perth Boorloo, Western Australia, Max Thornton-Smith is a fine artist who deals primarily with oil painting, charcoal, and video art. His work centers around three components: reforming various mediums in an animatic field, taking the use of traditional materials into a more digitally focused space, exploring abstract Australian landscape painting, and presenting “accessible – conceptualism”.

Taking inspiration from music, literature, philosophy and various other fields, Max’s practice has been described as a physical formation of his self-described “selfish curiosity” in the world.
Max has cited various influential figures in his life as inspiration to his work, notably: Robert Juniper, Tom Roberts, Arthur Boyd, Shaun Tan, Egon Schiele, and Guy Grey Smith. Alongside visual artists, Max has drawn inspiration from various other storytelling artists of the likes of Daniel Keyes, Hemmingway, Takehiko Inoue, Tsutomu Nihei and Tomihiko Morimi.
